HOUSE FIRE KILLS NYPD POLICE COMMANDER

By Jim Fay ENN NYC-NJ Metro Correspondent

NEW YORK CITY (ENN) - A two-alarm fire in a Queens, NYC, beach front community, resulted in the death of an NYPD Precinct Commander.

At approximately 0100 hrs., April 25, the FDNY responded to a reported house fire at 185 Beach 221 Street, in the shore community of Breezy Point, in the NYC Borough of Queens. The first arriving units were met with heavy fire from the two-story wood-frame house. This, plus the long distance of incoming fire units, the close proximity of the houses to one another, and small streets in the community, resulted in an almost immediate second alarm being transmitted by first arriving fire units.

The search of the house resulted in the discovery of the owner, NYPD Deputy Inspector John Fahy, 51, dead on the kitchen floor. His six-year-old son, James, was also found dead in the house.

Inspector Fahy was the Commanding Officer of Brooklyn's 63rd Precinct in the Flatbush section, and was a 27-year veteran of the Police Department.

The Fahy family was also struck by another tragedy recently. Inspector Fahy's late wife, Margaret, died in February of this year from cancer. Margaret Fahy herself was also a Captain in the NYPD. Two other sons of the couple survived the fire.

Fire Marshal's initial investigation indicate that the fire was not arson, but a cause could not be determined as of yet.

ENN and its staff wish to send their condolences and prayers for the family and friends of Insp. Fahy. May he rest in peace.
