CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA (ENN) - The Pennsylvania State Police will begin periodic patrols in the city of Chester on Saturday. This is part of a campaign to reduce crime in the city of 41,000 people. On Thursday, a large number of police, state and federal law enforcement agents ascended on the city and made about forty arrests.
The Delaware County District Attorney said, "We wanted to let everyone know that street-corner dealers won't be tolerated in Chester."
A State Police captain said that the state troopes will not patrol in Chester every day, but will spend a substantial amount of time in the city. About 12 Chester Police officers are usually assigned to a shift. The addition of the state troopers will double that number.
Chester for the last several years has had the highest crime rate in the State of Pennsylvania. The police sweep on Thursday involved 117 officers and agents.
