ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA (ENN) - The riot in the Yatala Labor Prison which started on Monday, ended peacefully Tuesday morning at approximately 2:10am, ending the tense 11-hour seige which involved more than 100 heavily armed police. The three remaining prison guards being held hostage were released and all 31 rioting prisoners of 'B-Division' returned to their cells. The guards all suffered cuts and bruising inflicted by the prisoners who bashed them.
Rioting prisoner's had negotiated with police several hours earlier asking for their grievances to be published in the media. Their wishes came true when Correctional Services Department's chief executive officer, Ms Sue Vardon, went public on network television and announced their grievances.
The prisoners demanded equal treatment to be given to Special Protectee's in the prison who were receiving special treatment. This was not the first time they had demanded this as several times before, their complaints were ignored.
The four prison officers, including the one released at the start of the riot, are now recovering in the Royal Adelaide Hospital and are expected to make a full recovery. At Yatala cleanup continues to the vandalised cell block and offices while an independant judicial inquiry is being called into the incident.
